Dungeons and Dragons, featuring Daniel Felder (from Portland, Oregon)
Children are guided in writing, role-playing, producing and performing their own story. Dungeons and Dragons is a wonderful open-ended way to create as a collaborative member of a team and foster one’s own skills of imagination, writing and theatre arts expression.
D&D departs from traditional wargaming and assigns each player a specific character to play instead of a military formation. These characters embark upon imaginary adventures within a fantasy setting. A Dungeon Master serves as the game’s referee and storyteller, while also maintaining the setting in which the adventures occur and playing the role of the inhabitants. The characters form a party that interacts with the setting’s inhabitants (and each other). Together they solve dilemmas, engage in battles and gather treasure and knowledge.[3] In the process the characters earn experience points to become increasingly powerful over a series of sessions.

“Beat the Odds” Drum Program with Sue Epstein (from Los Angeles)
(Beat the Odds Conflict Resolution Technique Training was developed with Remo in collaboration with the Healing and Arts Program at UCLA)
UCLArts and Healing has partnered in developing a training program and materials for Beat the Odds: Social and Emotional Skill Building Delivered in a Framework of Drumming. In the session on leadership, empathy and gratitude, when students were given an opportunity to lead a call and response from the center of the circle, other students were asked how the leader may have felt, which segued into a discussion of empathy and gratitude.
A combination of drumming and education in conflict resolution skills that is fun and empowering to children especially 8-10 years old and up.
